Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday. We're surrounded by both commercial and altruistic reasons to give at this time of the year, and not just when it comes to money. In the midst of this season of giving, we're glad to thank those who give so much of their time, energy and family life in dedicated service to our home country. It's for this reason that the holidays and military personnel, both active and veteran, are often intertwined in the minds of many.
Lilly employees recently marked Veterans Day with passionate speakers, beautiful music and the firing of a replica cannon similar to that our founder, Colonel Eli Lilly, used when he served stateside. An "Army-vs.-Navy" flag-football game even broke out. In that contest, the Army team led by Senior Vice President of Communciations and Corporate Affairs, Bart Peterson, besting the Navy squad, coached by President of Manufacturing Operations, Maria Crowe. That's how a Lilly colleague framed it to me recently, and I was struck by her poignant comment. May this be on the minds of Americans who live and speak freely as they go about their lives, and on more than just one or two days of the year.
