Ryan Reed Asks: Who’s in Your Diabetes Pit Crew?

NASCAR 2014: XFinity Series Lilly Diabetes Ford Mustang Jan 12Today’s guest blog post comes from Ryan Reed, driver of the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes American Diabetes Association Ford Mustang in the NASCAR XFINITY series and winner of the race at Daytona International Speedway. Reed — through his non-profit Ryan's Mission — collaborates with the American Diabetes Association and Lilly Diabetes on the Drive to Stop Diabetes initiative, which brings awareness and diabetes education to thousands of spectators at select NASCAR races nationwide, as well as at several off-track health and wellness initiatives.

When I was first diagnosed with diabetes in 2011, I was told I may never race again. Thanks to the support of my Diabetes Pit Crew – my family and my doctor – I found the strength I needed to continue pursuing my dream of being a NASCAR driver. Last year, I introduced you to my Diabetes Pit Crew: my brother, Cole; my mom, Karla; my dad, Mark; and my doctor. Now, I want to encourage people with diabetes to think about those who have supported them throughout their journey and enter the My Diabetes Pit Crew Sweepstakes.

You could win a chance to be an honorary member of my pit crew at one of the three NASCAR XFINITY Series races during American Diabetes Month in November. If you are selected as a winner, you can receive the following:

  • your name on a special patch displayed on the fire suit worn by a member of my racing pit crew and your picture featured in a mosaic on my pit wall
  • educational materials from Lilly to help you manage your diabetes
  • a personal phone call from me
  • the personalized fire suit patch autographed by yours truly.

To enter the My Diabetes Pit Crew Sweepstakes, fill out an online entry form. All U.S. residents 18 and older (at least 19 in AL and NE and 21 in MS) with diabetes are eligible to enter.

I hope that through the Sweepstakes, other people with diabetes will see that having the right team of people around them can help them improve the management of their diabetes and allow them to live their life to the fullest.
