As part of our promise to make life better for people around the world, each year we partner with United Way to give back to the communities where we live and work. For several years, that commitment has included encouraging our employees—and this year, family and friends, as well—to donate bags of gently used clothing to Goodwill locations. For every bag donated, the United Way and Goodwill pledged to give a $5 voucher to a family in need to spend at Goodwill stores. This year, the Lilly Foundation matched that amount, resulting in a $10 voucher for every bag donated.
By the time the drive was over, our employees, family, and friends had gathered 3,239 bags of clothing that together weighed more than 45,000 pounds, generating more than $32,000 for families in need. Beyond that, donations support programs that help people with barriers to employment learn the skills they need by working at local Goodwill stores. So even one bag of clothes launches a virtuous cycle that keeps on giving!
Recipients spent their vouchers on everything from children’s clothes to professional attire to household possessions. The thank you notes we received reminded us that the cumulative impact made by many small gestures can add up to something truly meaningful.
