More Insulin Affordability Options for People

Today, Lilly announced plans to introduce two additional lower-priced insulins. Both insulins will have 50 percent lower list prices compared to the branded versions and will be available by mid-April.

With these new options, more than 90 percent of people using a Humalog formulation will have access to a lower-priced version that may reduce their out-of-pocket costs.

These insulins are identical to branded versions and may be substituted at the pharmacy counter. Because most insurance plans provide affordable copays for chronic medicines that are much lower than the list price, people should ask their pharmacist whether these options reduce their out-of-pocket cost. Anyone can call the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center at (833) 808-1234 to find out if they’re getting the lowest possible price based on their eligibility.

Our first lower-priced insulin, Insulin Lispro, became available in May 2019 at a 50 percent lower list price. All major U.S. wholesalers now distribute Lispro and it can be ordered by any pharmacy, usually in 1-2 days. We’ve started negotiations with wholesalers and payers to make these additional lower-priced insulins available, too.

Many policymakers have encouraged us to lower the price of insulin. These two new lower-priced versions are the latest additions to our suite of programs to ensure everyone has affordable access to insulin.

More than 95 percent of people using Humalog pay less than $100 for their monthly prescription at retail pharmacies because of their insurance coverage or one of Lilly’s affordability solutions.

However, ensuring these solutions work for people can be challenging without the cooperation of other health care stakeholders. We remain committed to working with pharmacies, wholesalers, payers, and policymakers to make sure everyone has affordable access to the medicines they need.

If you use Lilly insulin and need support, we have solutions to help – including immediate access to insulin. We encourage people to call the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center at (833) 808-1234. Our patient-focused hotline staffed by medical representatives in the U.S. is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Eastern time.

We know long-term policy solutions – like first dollar coverage and Medicare Part D out of pocket caps – are needed, and we’re ready to work with policymakers to bring those options to people.
