Lilly continually explores various ways to transform clinical research, with the goal of helping to reduce patient burden and enabling more people to participate. One way to transform clinical research is to use digital health solutions. To help us assess these potential solutions, we actively gathered patient input in late 2016, during a 4-day online event with about 50 people from the United States, Japan and Spain who had recently participated in a clinical trial. The participants watched videos to help explain or illustrate the proposed concepts, talked with a moderator and answered quantitative questions.
The proposed digital health approaches fall into three broad categories:
- People-based (such as telehealth or virtual visits and mobile nursing)
- Device-based (such as biosensors or wearables)
- Location-based (such as using local clinics for site visits and home delivery of study drug)
