It is September and this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month theme is “Remember Me.” For me, it’s a reminder of what
Lilly is fighting for in our decade’s long research to treat, cure, and prevent Alzheimer’s disease. The people
living with Alzheimer’s and the lifetime of memories each of them has. There are approximately 47 million people
around the world living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. That’s almost the population of Spain. And, if nothing
changes, that number will almost triple to more than 130 million in just over 30 years according to Alzheimer’s
Taking steps to recognize and mitigate the global impact of Alzheimer’s disease is no easy undertaking. The brain is a complicated part of the body and, while we’ve learned much about Alzheimer’s, we still have a long way to go before we can make its impact on our lives a distant memory.
While we learn more from a scientific perspective, public understanding of the disease needs to grow as well. There’s still work to be done to raise awareness about the devastating emotional and financial impact of Alzheimer’s disease.
